In Santiago drinking Mote con Huesillo

Mote con Huesillo = cooked husked wheat with peaches. Mmmm… delicious.

Really, you’re asking? Despite the strangeness of this concoction, which is a mix of soggy wheat chunks topped with sugar- or honey-water, with a floating peach (first dehydrated then soaked in the liquid), it’s actually a great snack. Found throughout Santiago at many busy intersections, street vendors sold us this small cup of Mote con Huesillo for 400 Chilean pesos ($0.80) as we made our way to Plaza de Armas from Barrio Brasil.

My new friend, Stephanie, looking apprehensive before tasting, shows off a big chunk of Huesillo. In her words, this part of the drink reminded her of a floating testicle. Thanks Stephanie. Bottoms up!
